Abstract

The article examines the functioning of linguistic units with quantitative meaning in the lexical-phraseological field of ‘food,’ linguistic factors in the formation of the meaning of quantity in words and their use in speech, and provides a linguistic and statistical analysis of stylistic features in words and phraseological units and the peculiarities of their recording in Russian language dictionaries. A distinctive feature of quantitative semantics in the Russian language is that it is often realised not literally, but through figurative means, metaphors and metonymies, which give the expression an additional emotional, evaluative and expressive colouring, allowing the author not only to indicate the volume or number, but also to create a certain impression of the size of a particular object or phenomenon. The aim of the study is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the functioning of food metaphors in language and speech, including the development of a classification of quantitative lexemes in the lexical-phraseological field of ‘food, the peculiarities of their use in Russian linguistic and cultural dictionaries, taking into account stylistic marking. The scientific novelty of the work lies in the semantic and polysemous study of lexical-quantitative lexemes within the structure of the lexical-phraseological field ‘food’, which express the metaphorical representation of the image of food in the Russian language. Linguistic statistical analysis of language units helped to reveal the degree of realisation of their figurative metaphorical meaning in the language. A comparative analysis of the functioning of food metaphors in Russian and other languages could be a promising direction for further research, providing a basis for identifying universal and national-cultural features of metaphorisation and for a deeper understanding of the role of metaphor in the formation of the linguistic picture of the world. In the course of the scientific research, methods of semantic, component, contextual and linguistic-statistical analysis were used, which contributed to the determination of the theoretical and practical significance of the scientific problem under study.
