MOTIVE DEFINITION IN GERMAN LITERARY STUDIES
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to consider the genesis of the concept of motive in German literary criticism. The method of comparative analysis was applied within the analysis of research materials devoted to determining the motive. It was found that terminological unambiguity and consistency in the definition of the motive have not yet been achieved due to the inconsistency of its definitions. Since the existing theories of motive are not enough to analyze a literary text, there is a need for their comparative analysis. The novelty of this work lies in the author's attempt to develop his/her definition of motive by comparing various scientific approaches of German literary critics to the topic of "motive research". The results of the study serve as an impetus for further research in the field of studying the motive.
